Morocco wildlife
Morocco wildlife is as diversified as the terrain, climate, and geography. Plants and trees can be found in Morocco’s Sahara desert. Animals that have adapted to this unusual habitat of hard terrains, little rain (100mm or less per year), temperatures above 50°F in the summer, and very cold nights in the winter. This one-of-a-kind wild Morocco created an exception for Sahara desert-adapted species. Some of these Moroccan desert species are fully wild and on the verge of extinction. This unusual Moroccan desert Fauna is rarely seen.
There is a surprisingly extensive Sahara desert Fauna that lives around the dunes of the Moroccan Sahara desert, such as the Erg Chebbi and Erg Chegaga dunes.
Walking or Sahara camel trekking, in our opinion, is the best way to see wild animals in the Sahara desert. If you’ve chosen to spend more time in the Sahara desert during your Moroccan vacation, keep an eye out for Morocco wildlife, and don’t be hesitant to ask your guide to stop for you if you find one.

Dromedary Camel
For years, this wonderful animal was the primary mode of transportation in the desert; they are an amazing animal that can go without water for a few days, making it the ideal animal to serve the needs of the desert. Camel riding is now accessible as an activity on Morocco desert tours.
Beetles
Have you ever observed a sand track? It’s primarily for tracking this small creature that roams the dunes. Beetles are numerous in Sahara nature. Beetles are common in Moroccan dunes, regardless of which Erg Chebbi desert adventure you did.
Barbary ground squirrel
It is the only species that lives in North Africa, and its habitat is rocky ground, hence you can locate it in the Anti Atlas mountains and little rocky oasis in the Sahara. This squirrel’s main source of nutrition is seeds and fruits, mainly almonds and Argan.
Moroccan spiny-tailed lizard in the desert
This lizard, also known as Uromastyx, can be found in considerable numbers in the southeast of Morocco. They are mostly herbivorous, but will occasionally consume insects and other small animals. Uromastyx is easily identified in the Sahara because it likes to settle in a mountainous, rocky place and bask in the sun throughout the spring and summer months.

Fennec frogs

Mice of the Desert (Idwi or Jerboa)
One of the most prevalent Mice in Morocco’s sand dunes, they resemble miniature kangaroos with long tile, short front legs, and long rear legs. Kangaroos and Jarboas move similarly, hopping and saltating. They spend the day in burrows and are frequently active at night. These are the kinds of creatures that visitors to Morocco’s Chegaga Dunes and Erg Chebbi are likely to encounter.
Hedgehog of the Desert
One of Morocco’s Sahara desert mammals. It is the smallest hedgehog, measuring between 140 to 280 cm in length (5,5 to 11 inches). They are not globally threatened, however, road traffic is suspected to be reducing hedgehog populations in some locations.
The female hedgehog gives birth to up to six young, who are born deaf and bling, with their quills hidden beneath their skin to protect the mother during the birth. The quills emerge within a few hours of birth, but it takes around 20 days for the eyes to open. The Saharan Hedgehog is a rare species that only moves at night in the Sahara desert.
Monitor lizards in the desert
One of the most endangered animals in Morocco’s Sahara desert. They normally measure 1-2 meters in length and range in color from grey to vivid orange.
